“This is cheating,” X says, with an air of vague indignation. “It’s illegal.”
“I have no sympathy for you,” Y says, pointedly sipping from xir glass.
“Ze wasn’t supposed to smile at me, how am I supposed to resist that? It’s so unfair.”
“You are. So stupid.”
“Hey, do you want to buy this?”
“I currently own sixteen cents in pennies and one nickel, is that enough?”
“I’m sorry,” X says, packed bag at xir feet. Y takes a deep breath, pulls a smile from some deep reserve of strength.
“No, don’t be sorry!” ze says. “Go and live your dreams! I want you to be happy. Just. Come home to me, when you can?”
“Oh, this is my favorite song!” X says, as the radio croons out a crystal-clear love song.
“Yeah, it’s a good one,” Y says, staring very hard at the radio, which has never seemed inclined to play anything but static before.
“Oh my god, are you okay?”
“Hmm? Oh, yeah, I’m fine, why?”
“You have thorns growing out of your skin- is that a flowerbud, right by your eye socket?”
“Oh! Yes, my flowers, aren’t they lovely?”
“Here, my darling, let me sing you to sleep.”
“Will I wake up again?”
“You, my dearest? Of course you will.”
“Hey, wake up, we need you down in the meeting room urgently.”
“Hmm? What’s going on?”
“Listen, I don’t know what you said to that alien ambassador, but xe’s refusing to speak to anyone but you, get up, let’s go.”
