The immortal gazes at the grave silently. Everyone leaves eventually. This is nothing to be sad about. It’s not.

“Goddamnit,” xe curses, brushing away tears “Goddamnit we were supposed to have another thirty years. It’s too soon.”

It’s always too soon.

“I don’t understand, I thought you and [X] are friends?”

“We are- it’s- look, it’s complicated.”

“We- we used to date. [X] broke my heart. I don’t think xe knows how badly xe hurt me and now it’s just awkward! I don’t want to go to xir wedding, with xir spouse who xe loves and also xir spouse is my friend and I just- I can’t do this!”

“It’s like,” xe says “my parents, it’s like- I don’t know how to-. It’s like they don’t know how to love me anymore. Like they’re thinking about the ways they let little-kid me down, not the ways they’re still hurting me.”

“But, but they still love you, right?”

“What is loving me worth,” xe says sulkily “when they don’t even know who the me really is?”
