This is really hypocritical. Because the thing is you’re not supposed to wear anything with the flag, or use it for displays unless it’s on a pole, according to the Flag Code. Here’s the quote (got it from Wikipedia): The flag should not be used as “wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery”, or for covering a speaker’s desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general (exception for coffins).
