this is gonna be the last post on flag discourse

for those of you seeing this on your dash for the first time somehow i started a discussion on how to treat an american flag

block ‘flag discourse’ if you don’t want like 20 posts of me being increasingly confused over flag etiquette

thank you to everyone who contributed! I feel like we all learned a lot here! Your country terrifies me!

@tirefirespectacular this is the most goddamn dystopia thing i’ve ever read like seriously??? civilians are expected to do this in their day to day lives?? no

what the fuck america what the fuck.

aren’t most flags made of plasticky shit anyway? why would you burn it?? just dust it off???

No, they’re made from actual fabric. Also you have to fold them and raise them in specific ways.
Another thing that isn’t Official, but you have to be careful about wind. My dad was a color guard member, so he knows that if you out a huge flag in a very windy day, it will beat itself apart. Like they tear and wear and fade like any other fabric.

is there a special wind ceremony??
no wait don’t tell me i’m good

listen there are some symbols that are incredibly serious business okay i will give you that. There are some symbols that are to be respected and honoured in all ways and with ceremonies and dignity because they are important.

but a flag? a flag? a flag that every single person old enough to point and say ’look’ can get their hands on? that is not a symbol that needs a ritual sacrifice every time it gets some dust on it

no. no. america why

This is really hypocritical. Because the thing is you’re not supposed to wear anything with the flag, or use it for displays unless it’s on a pole, according to the Flag Code.
Here’s the quote (got it from Wikipedia):
The flag should not be used as “wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery”, or for covering a speaker’s desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general (exception for coffins).
According to the Flag Code, you should never wear anything with the flag, nor use it as a decoration unless it’s on a pole or a coffin. No lapel pins, no bathing suits, no hanging the flag on podiums. No. Stop.

oh gosh

Okay I LIVE in America and I don’t understand it. People will yell at third graders for letting it touch the ground when they’re raising it at sunset camps.

please help america i think it’s confused

don’t yell at children for something that should be explained

It’s considered disrespectful. I don’t know if this has been said in this strip before but if you fly an American flag you can do one of two things: you take it down at night, or you put a spotlight on it so that it can be seen at night.
It’s some weird shit but in some states, you can be fined and even arrested for flying an American flag at night w/o a spotlight on it. They don’t do that stuff with individual state flags.
+ if it gets ripped you have to retire it and get a new one; especially if the flag is being flown in a public place (schools, libraries, etc.)

what the fuck
