hi torture birb ! so i’m writing a character that’s being kept blind for a long periods of time (weeks-months) while still interacting with other characters and i don’t know the best way to keep them in the dark without resorting to something that would cause Major Long Term Effects like actual blindness and anything with the eyes. i’m trying not to make it something medically because the captor is not necessarily trained At All but ¯_(ツ)_/¯ i’m just not sure what the best way to do it is

@smolkitsuneposts donated this part of the answer for me! they’re a blessing to this earth

Nah son this is torture birb’s baby birb thing.
The setting your character is placed in will undoubtedly affect the whole blindness situation. Is it the past or present?
You can also Google “temporary blindness causes” and it gives you a huge list of causes, most of which your captor may not actually be able to use if they haven’t done any research about blinding someone…

There’s Conversion Disorder, which is mentioned in several sites about temporary blindness. Your captive may simply experience psychological trauma and display the blindness symptom.

You can also simply keep the captive’s room dark, or simply blindfold them.
I’d go with confinement and blindfolding.
But be careful of stress positions!!! Keep your captive tied up for too long and they can actually die from kidney failure. Let them stretch, try a different position. I recommend changing their position every one to two days.

@scripttraumasurvivor and @scripttorture are GODSENDS.

hope this helps!!! Good luck my dude.

For my portion of the answer!

I’d definitely recommend sticking to a blindfold! It’s the easiest way to keep someone blind without any long term effects, and it can be very effective! You don’t need to stick to a cloth blindfold- that could come off. Instead, Design your own! Look at how eye patches are made. If you’re of age, you could also do some research into kink blindfolds, but i’d tread carefully.

this right here is an article on a research project where people were kept blindfolded for four days

and interesting read and probably pretty useful! I wish you luck my friend!

O Great Birb, I ask of you some reasons for two high schoolers to be hanging out after school

O brave anon

oh wait shit i almost finished this list thinking ‘they’re staying after school together’ but no theyre just hanging out lmao whoops

-Drugs b/c stereotypes

-They’re going shopping together for clothes/ makeup/ art supplies

-going to a movie together!! gotta see them action movies

-Homework/ group projects

-They’re gonna go clean up on of their rooms together b/c its easier with a friend

-Going to a playground together to go on the swings for 5 hours without feeling like a creepy loner

-YA fiction discourse time

-They’re gonna go to a new cafe together and critique the drinks to one another in a snooty announcer voice

-going to an art museum together b/c its no fun alone

I have a thing going on that I need help from a crow king.. i have house party scene and a girl’s ex is there, and she doesnt want to tell her husband because it’d end ugly, so her friend asks her a permission to embarrass in front of others so he would leave, but I have absolutely no fuckin idea what she could do. Please bless me with your ideas 🙌

So the friend is embarrassing the ex?

She could spill things on his clothes. A bit of a classic, yes, but it bears mentioning. People generally want to go home if they’ve been doused in beef broth. She could also spill something nasty af of him like old food or sour milk. (emetophobia warning for this next sentence) Bonus if she can retch on demand and puke on his shoes

She could drunkenly tell tales of how he peed himself at a previous party, even if it’s not true, or other rude and embarrassing stories. Or ask him pointless and invasive personal questions to make him uncomfortable

hope this is okay! Sorry it’s so short!

Hello wise and mighty birb, I have a question. I have a character who is asexual, but I’m not 100% sure how to write this properly..

I’m asexual so??

EDIT: this has been edited for clarity of language, adding information in I either forgot or decided to cut initially for length or because i thought it was too technical for a how-to-write post, and all around been checked over for errors. I’ve also put in an effort to look for any internalized biases I may have had that gave this post a skewed feel, and the post has been edited in an attempt to make it more inclusive.

A big Thank You to the user who brought up these errors to my attention! I don’t claim to be perfect, and I know my posts aren’t the end-all-be-all of information. If you guys ever spot any errors in my posts, or have extra info, always feel free to reblog it with the information, or bring it to my attention. I feel like working together with your guys is one of the most important features of this blog to make sure everything is as accurate and detailed as possible, like the chain posts we’ve had on usa flag discourse and emetophobia. I really do want you guys to message me if you’ve feel I’ve messed up somewhere- I’m 18, I’m still learning, and I promise if you feel like there’s something you feel I need to learn, I will listen.

This is still written for the purposes of a how-to-write post

Asexuality is defined by a person having low or no sexual attraction to another person! This doesn’t mean that an ace person is blind to physical attractiveness, it just means the ace persons thought process might work a little differently

She was a shapely woman, with a slender waist and large, firm breasts. Her hips swayed as she walked, straight-backed and seductive

She had really large breasts and they looked fantastic, but man oh man, they must hurt when she walks down the stairs or something. I wonder if she uses some kind of corset to hold them up- it would explain her stiff posture.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that an ace person is entirely blind to sex appeal, though. An ace person will probably notice more revealing outfits or the stereotypical femme fatale red lipstick, but they’ll likely focus on describing the aesthetic of the person, rather than the sort of ~emotions~ evoked by it.

Say you have a succubus trying to seduce your ace person. Sure, most ace people (though not all) are capable of getting physically aroused. But it’ll be less like a seduction and more like

ace person: well.

ace person: time to go eat popcorn aggressively

succubus: don’t you wanna fuck?

ace person: lmao popcorn

i mean, sure. Some ace people have sex. Some don’t. It’s all a personal decision.

Asexual people tend to fall into one of three categories- sex repulsed, sex neutral, and sex-favourable.

Sex repulsed (or sex averse) asexuals find sex disgusting, upsetting, or otherwise associated with negative emotions. Sex repulsed aces might avoid places associated with sexual context, like bars, nightclubs, or comedy movies- not all of them, of course, but comedies that rely heavily on sexual humour might be out (Spy with Melissa Mccarthy for example!). Sex repulsed are the least likely group of aces to have sex at all, especially if they are also aces with low/ no libido or low/ no physical arousal.

Sex neutral aces have no strong feelings about sex, the same way one might have no strong feelings about unloading the dishwasher. It’s something one might do if their partner or friend is into sex, or if the person in question has a higher libido. Sex neutral aces might not be bothered by sexual content in low doses, but still might seek to avoid things containing a great deal of sexual content.

Sex favourable aces are usually fairly on board with sexual jokes and references- essentially, while a sex favourable ace doesn’t feel attraction, they’ll probably be just fine with engaging in sexual humour. Sex positive aces are the most likely aces to have sex, especially one night stands or those sort of things.

Another thing to note is that asexual=/= aromantic. With most sexualities, you can kinda assume that the romantic and sexual preferences line up, but not with aspec stuff!! that’s why you hear phrases like ‘ace lesbian’ ‘aromantic bisexual’ or ‘aroace’. This isn’t a post on aromantic people who aren’t ace, so I’m only including info on or applicable too aroace folks

A non aro ace person can still feel crushes and romantic love! Hence non-aro. There might be some stress on the ace character to feel sexual, or they might feel underdeveloped or not ready despite knowing they’re ace. There’s also a lot of pressure from the media and societal norms to have sex once in a relationship. Even if the relationship is healthy and loving and full of good communication, the ace person might still feel like they ~arent doing enough~ since there’s no sex.

An aromantic ace person won’t have crushes at all! No romantic tension, no sexual tension. Some aromantic people feel alterous attraction, which is often described as being like friendship, but more intense and deeper, with the added desire to touch (like holding hands or snuggling), but not as passionate as romance. Some aroace people might think that it is romance, and end up in a relationship that they’re uncomfortable in. Some aroace people can also be aplatonic, which means they don’t desire any kind of companionship. It depends on the person my man

a ~bad~ example of an aplatonic aromantic is voldemort. Often times villians are aromantic and that’s used as a~motivator~ of their ~evilness~. please don’t do this.

Aromantic people also fall on the romance repulsed/neutral/positive spectrum

A lot of ace and aroace people struggle with microaggressions like ‘You’re just a late bloomer’ ‘people just aren’t people without love and sex’ ‘unmarried people must be so unhappy’ and the fact that nearly all media involves a romance plot and the majority include some kind of sexual references if not a blatant sex scene.

You know how everyone is touting wonder woman as god tier? Yeah, I loved it, but man I’m so sick of that kind of moral lesson of ‘love taught me goodness’. A very aro-unfriendly movie. (see the voldemort comment above)

A lot of language is full of microaggressions that are tough to notice. These things can also be subjective- when i first wrote this post i used the phrase ‘non aro aces can feel crushes fine’ to mean than non aro ace people would still feel crushes, but the phrasing is confusing and subjective, and can be hurtful. The phrase ‘just friends’ irks me, and I know I still use it since it’s such a common phrase and view of platonic relationships. It’s extremely tough to cut such phrases from your vocabulary, especially if you aren’t in a place where you can be open about your id and have to perform heteronormativity in order to ensure your safety.

lastly: JOKES!!!! jokes r the cornerstone of an ace character. Cake jokes, food jokes, exaggerated flirting between friends ect ect. Jokes make a character!!!

I was given these links by the user who asked me to edit this post, and I definitely think they’re worth checking out. This is one on asexual people with no libido or arousal and this is one on the ace experience

Hope this is helpful!!

how gay for one to decide even further to do more look like

Do you mean like the phrase ‘I’m gayer than expected/ previously anticipated’?

Mostly, queer people use these phrases when seeing an attractive person of their preferred gender. It doesn’t really mean anything other than ‘wow that person is pretty and they’re the same/similar gender as I am so it’s gay pretty’

I use these phrases a lot.

I love horror but I am SO SICK of writers giving characters dogs for the sole purpose of killing them horribly as cheap buildup/exposition. It’s so overdone that the second a dog is mentioned, you know it’s coming, it’s not even shocking. So before I give this genre a stab myself (stab, get it?) what are some good ways to build dread and/or show that Something Is Terribly Wrong/Something Bloodthirsty Is Here without sacrificing the family dog to the exposition gods?

Stab! Stab! Stab!

The exposition gods demand BLOOD! Must! Stab! DoG!

No but seriously. The reason dogs are often killed in horror is because most people love dogs!! Dogs are the greatest!! Hurting a dog is such a Serious Offense, some white people will take animal cruelty offenses to be a more serious indicator of a persons foul nature over racist hate crimes

Hence why killing dogs is popular- how awful an entity must be, to harm a pupper???

But whatever. As I like to say, save a dog, stab a cop.

Don’t quote me on that

There’s a few things that are Really Bad in western society. Harming animals, harming small children, and harming (or even mildly disrespecting) cops.

So why not kill the small child of the family?? Drive the parents to rage and grief a la Stranger Things? Why not make one of the parents a cop and drag ‘em through the mud. Or the slaughterhouse.

Religious figures are also a big one. Can’t disrespect that cross!!  Or bible. Set the jesus baby in a barn thing christians do for christmas on fire. Have them draw pagan symbols all over the bible.

Or the american flag. Americans are so Extra about their flag, seriously. I was surprised how many people actual wear the fucking thing. Why?? Like seriously, why??? I bet most americans have a flag in their house. Burn It. Shred it. Leave it n the trash with the rotting veggies

You could also have your entity turn the dog against them. Not harming the dog- making it ~evil~, despite loving and caring for the dog in it’s own monstrous way. How Dare. Corrupting Man’s Best Friend

(womans best friend is a cat I think. Can I claim crows for the nb’s? Or snakes?)

Finger guns~

I have this character that acts like a Mary Sue and is super empathic and goes out of her way to help people, but her major flaw is her self-destruction and depreciation, and letting her past actions effect her with heavy guilt. How would I go about writing that?

Answer courtesy of @smolkitsuneposts

Hi there, my dude.
Ah, the Mary Sue… There’s MANY different subtypes, but I suppose you mean the kind that everyone likes and thinks about too much? “Past Actions” is a bit vague, too, but you’ll want to show her internal struggles and what drives her to help others.
“Why is she going out of her way to help me?”
Does she do anything for herself? Or is she too ashamed? Does she believe that she deserves help after whatever she did in the past?
Her past actions will be at the back of her mind. Is there something that still affects you to this day?

Think about it this way:
I was mean to this one kid way way back in elementary school. I still feel bad about it, and I try to make sure that I’m not unreasonable to anyone else.

She may forsake her own work to assist someone else, and may ultimately fail because of it. Or maybe she gives a homeless person her paycheck and suffers as a result.

Hope this helps

Addons by the borb since u sent it to this blog and i should contribute something lmao-

A lot of people who struggle with self-deprecation do try and ‘make up for it’ by being overly kind to other people. ‘I’m such an awful person who doesn’t deserve any kindness but if i Do Enough maybe i will Be Better’

This kind of over empathy works a lot like a form of emotional self harm- by wrapping oneself in the problems of others, there’s no spoons left over for the person to work on their own issues. When your character is really wrapped up in ~plot~, and all these stressful things are happening, She’ll probably be Even More Helpful Than Usual, even though her own life is falling apart. I’d throw in some flavour text about all the unwashed dishes in the sink, or all the clothes on the floor, how greasy her hair is, how she isn’t doing makeup even though she normally does ect ect, even as she provides stellar emotional labour for everyone else around her.

She might also have a ritual of some kind centered around her guilt- whenever she does a fun activity, she needs to ‘make up for it’ by doing ‘x’ in return

a ~mary sue~ like character doesn’t exist if you flesh them out my friend. Give her a personality, give her a fatal flaw, and she’ll be a lovely character

i hope this is helpful!! let me/ us know if there’s anything else we can do to help!!!

hello! so i have a character who has to watch a very close friend (basically their little brother) being tortured multiple times, with no way to stop it. what would be the psychological effects of that? ps i love your blog <3

Hi! Thank you anon ❤

disclaimer: not a doctor, not a psychologist

This is a scenario I’ve talked about with a friend a few times lmao we’re all terrible (only the characters are blood brother and sister)

It seems to be very difficult to find any exact article for this, so let’s try and piece something together and see what we get

This would be a form of mental torture and i actually found a cool presentation on mental torture here it’s not exactly what you want but it might still be helpful? <– pretty intense trigger warning in there, though, it involves testimonies and stories from detainees from guantanamo bay. this is another article on torture and it has a pretty interesting comment section. tread carefully and treat these stories with respect

Your character would probably feel intense rage towards the torturers and towards themself for being unable to interfere or help- this can be made worse if the torturers are blaming the character for not doing more despite their helplessness. One of the most commonly noted long term effects of torture is intense rage that’s very difficult to contain or deal with

They’ll probably struggle long term with feelings of helplessness and may grow wildly independent- they need to do everything Themself, and may also refuse help of any kind due to feelings of unworthiness, like they don’t deserve it. This can lead to a lot of double standards in terms of thinking (oh, [Y] deserves help because he got tortured of course he couldnt escape or fight back, but I the Useless One should rot all alone since I didn’t help him. They might also develop a compulsive need to help others on top of the anger as a way of ~making up for it~.

also the guilt!! Like a ‘how dare I be upset I wasn’t even the one who got tortured; sort of thing, where being upset is seen as selfishness and weakness

hope this is helpful! sorry for the delay my guy!

Scuze me friendo, how the hell do I write an intoxicated person (alcohol)? Pls help me bc idk how to do this ;-;

I also don’t know the thing lmao so let’s work this through together

I guess step 1. would be research? If you’re over the age of majority where you live, you could try drinking to see it’s effects on you and how things are. That being said, if you’re underage or a non-drinker (like me), there’s got to be a way to go about this

How drunk they are will determine how strong the effects of the alcohol are- you probably won’t see severely slurred speech in someone who’s only had a single beer, while a person one beer in probably won’t collapse into their own vomit. this here is a nice guide on writing styles for speech and movement of drunken people that I strongly recommend!!

Since that guide covers the speech and movements of drunken people, I’m gonna skip that and talk about the personalities of drunken people. have you ever heard of a mean drunk? or a happy drunk?

Drinking alcohol reduces the inhibitions of a character. This means a drunken person is just ‘more themself’ rather than suddenly changing personalities. A good example of this is allen walker from d grey man! Allen often acts very cheerful and formal, but is a very angry drunk- just like when he was a foul mouthed child! Yuri katsuki apparently stripped mostly naked and pole danced in public while drunk, despite being very anxious typically. This is because the alcohol helped him forget or work past his anxiety and allow him to act in a way he may wish to typically, not because he had a complete personality change.

Characters who typically ‘act’ as a part of their personality, like covering up insecurities will lose that. Bein drunk also makes it easier to disregard fears or anxiety (hence, liquid courage) and also reduces ones ability to keep a secret (since it tends to be tempting to tell someone and since ur inhibitions are lowered, why not?)

Alcohol is a depressant, which means activity in the brain is lowered. This means a very drunk person won’t feel very much pain (my uncle, an emt, told me a story of a guy who stapled his dick to the wall and seemed completely fine since he was too drunk to feel the pain) but will also have lowered coordination and likely be quite tired/ calm

‘blackout drunk’ only happens when you are VERY drunk. a lot drunk. so drunk. not ‘one beer’ drunk, more like ‘16 glasses of champagne drunk’

Hangovers are a result of the wicked dehydration alcohol can cause (among other things). They consist of awful dry mouth, exhaustion, and a wicked headache that gets worse with bright lights and noise. It’s a lot like writing a sick character!.. since you are writing a sick character… Younger characters can bounce back from being drunk pretty easily, especially if they drank water along with the alcohol, but older characters will have worse hangovers that can last longer.

Anyway, sorry for the wait!! I hope this is helpful!!

If anyone wants to add on, please do!! especially if you have experience with drinking, being drunk
